“Mr. and Mrs. Zinn:” The back of this photo indicates that it was taken at “D. R. Clark’s Premium Art Gallery, Lafayette, Indiana.” Based on that location, I believe this is William H. Zinn and his wife Jennie, who appear in the 1880 census in Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co, IN. William ran a dry-goods store in Lafayette.

William H. Zinn was born about 1833 either in Germany or in Pennsylvania of parents born in Germany. Jennie was born about 1844 in New York or Michigan. It appears that they married about 1870. In the 1880 census, they have daughters Mary (b. abt. 1871) and Nellie (b. abt. 1877), both born in Indiana. They appear in the 1900 census still in Lafayette; Nellie is with her parents but Mary is not.

Mary Zinn married Daniel R. Warmington on 14 November 1894 in Tippecanoe Co, IN. In the 1910 census, they appear in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co, Ohio, with their daughter Marion Z. (b. Nov. 1900 in OH). Marion is still with her parents in the 1930 census in Cleveland. But at some point before 1945 she married John Delmont Kling because she is listed as his wife in the 1945 Cleveland Blue Book (a social register). Listed with them are Antoinette Virginia Kling, Katherine Brayton Kling, and John Adam Kling II. However, it is likely that some or all of these children were from an earlier marriage of John’s. (The death record of Antoinette Kling, from Nov. 28, 2000, indicates that her mother’s maiden name was Brayton.) Marion (Warmington) Kling died in Beachwood, Cuyahoga Co, OH, in Feb. 1984.

Nellie Jane Zinn married George R. Burt on 12 June 1900 in Tippecanoe Co, Indiana. It appears that George R. Burt (b. abt. 1875 in Michigan) was a son of Wellington R. Burt (b. 1831 in NY) who was a wealthy lumber-man in Saginaw, Michigan. Wellington was Mayor of East Saginaw (1867-68), ran for Governor and U.S. Representative, and was a member of the Michigan State Senate. Nellie and George appear in the 1910 census in Battle Creek, Calhoun Co, MI, with their son, Wellington R. (b. abt. 1902 in Ohio), obviously named for his grandfather. This younger Wellington R. Burt appears in the 1930 census in Battle Creek, MI, with his wife Josephine L. (b. abt. 1902 in MI) and their daughter Jane L. Burt.
