Other Identified Photos from the Album (Part 4)

“Sam Smith and Mr. Montgomery”: It seems likely that the man on the left is Samuel C. Smith, Jr., the younger brother of Martin L. Smith. Samuel was born about 1847 in Ohio. He appears in the 1880 census in Tuscola, Douglas Co, IL, with his wife Melvina (b. abt. 1857 in KS), son William F. (b. abt. 1874 in IL), and daughter Loretta (b. abt. 1877 in IL). The identity of Mr. Montgomery is unknown.

“Aunt Theresa Mintonye”: This photo was the first real clue about the identity of the Tullises in the album. The name “Mintonye” is even more uncommon than “Tullis” and it rang a bell as being the name of a Tullis spouse that I had in my files. Sure enough, I had that Jesse H. Tullis, Jr., had married a Lydia Ann Mintonye. That indicated that the Tullises pictured could be children of Jesse and Lydia (which I now know they were), and that Theresa Mintonye could be the sister or sister-in-law of Lydia. Information provided later by Ann Nolan indicates that this is Teressa Huntsinger (b. Jan. 13, 1834), daughter of Isaac Huntsinger and Mary Wolf. She married Balding Mintonye on Aug. 25, 1850. Balding was the younger brother of Lydia Ann Mintonye. Balding and Teressa had nine children: William (b. 1851), Charles (b. 1854), Marietta (b. 1856, d. 1857), Martha (b. 1858, married Burris), Etta (b. 1860, married Stranbinger), Jennie (b. abt. 1867), Albert (b. 1865, d. 1886), Rosa (b. 1870) and Olive (b. 1873).
