John Tullis (1882-1935) and Familiesby Helen Tullis (ahr6228@alltel.net), including information supplied by Betty Adkisson (BAdki15626@aol.com) Editor’s Note: This is the third in a series of excerpts from Helen Tullis’ book, "Melvin Thomas Tullis: Ancestors and Descendants". John Tullis (1882-1935) was a brother of William Moses Tullis (1869-1939) who was profiled in the last issue. John Tullis was born January 9, 1882, in Hog Mountain, Gwinnett Co, Georgia, to John S. Tullis and Susannah Jane Swafford. He was their fifth child. After the death of Susannah some time around 1886, John S. moved the family to Alabama, possibly to be near his sister, Emily, who lived in Marion Co, Alabama. About 1905, John (the younger) married Carrie Willoughby, who was born about 1885 in Georgia. They had two daughters and two sons:
On December 8, 1914, Carrie died at approximately 29 years of age. With four young children to raise, John married Nancy Brownie Oliver (born July 24, 1892, in Etowah Co, Alabama) on February 21, 1915, in Etowah Co, Alabama. John and Nancy had two children:
John died on December 1, 1935, at the age of 53. Nancy survived him by many years; she died on July 24, 1959. Both are buried in Shiloh Cemetery, Atalla, Etowah Co, Alabama.
